Understanding Underpainting
Painting portraits can be intimidating if you are unsure of where to begin. For me, it is that initial layer of pastel that makes the subject start to take shape.
Originally a 3D digital artist, I traded my tablet pen for a pastel and fell in love with the medium almost instantly. With a BA (Hons) degree in Visual Effects, I decided after university to go back to my roots of working with traditional materials. I taught myself to work in pastel after years of experience with pencil.
Now working as an Art Technician, I am surrounded by creativity and inspiration every day. I then get to go home to my own projects and also create commissioned pastel paintings from my studio. Although self-taught, I love to pick up techniques from other artists and share my methods with others.
Focusing on portraiture, I like to explore imagery of animals, people and more. I love being able to create something that looks so real but up-close has all the texture and softness that pastel leaves behind. For me, nothing has come close to the pigmentation and durability of Unison Colour pastels, which is why they are now forever a staple in my set!

It seems a while ago since we asked for applications from artists to become an Associate Artists & wow the applications came in thick & fast. So much so it took our Unison Helen a good while to get through them all.
