Judy Tate

Unison Colour Associate Artist

Unison Colour welcomes Judy Tate as an Associate Artist

With a degree in Sciences rather than The Arts my career began in hospital medical labs in the UK and abroad then moving into the business world and ultimately into business management. 15 years ago that all changed when life offered me the opportunity to change tack and fulfil a long held desire to concentrate on developing into a far more creative world.

I am very lucky to live and work in Dorset where inspiration is on our doorstep. I have been drawn to painting with soft pastels for a long time now finding the versatility, immediacy and vibrancy hard to beat. Underlying all of my work is a love of colour and the excitement of seeing how far I can take it.

I am continually inspired by the natural world – there is nothing I enjoy more than sketching out and about – mostly being drawn to organic forms. My sketchbooks and travelogues are an ongoing source of inspiration as well. The excitement of colour and how I can utilise it is key to my process.

Studio based work (again usually inspired by some form of organic form) is often of a more abstract nature and now seems to be combining the two branches of my work practice, with recurring motifs ‘beyond’ and ‘behind’ often with paths going into infinity.

Highlights of 2019/2020 have been being invited to become Associate Artist with Unison and being interviewed for an article in Pastel Journal magazine – worldwide distributed magazine about the world of soft pastels and writing a blog for Gail Sibley (fellow Unison Associate Artist).

For the last seven years I have exhibited work at the prestigious Mall Galleries in London in the annual UK Pastel Society exhibitions.

I am a regular exhibitor at The Gallery at 41 in Corfe Castle and Gallery on the Square in Dorchester.

In 2019 I was Art Trail organiser for Open for Art including organisation of a trail of 19 studios, opening own studio in 2019 and planning and curation of Duchy of Cornwall Group Exhibition for 85 artists and sculptors.

Regular workshops for art societies and small groups in Poundbury based studio (mixed media and pastels) also keep me busy.

A Pink Letter Day!

So, like many other artists, I do get some scam emails, purporting to be interested buyers from overseas. It is a common problem. These scams are very clever and we need to be very alert to the issue.
