A Change Of Tone – A One Box Challenge
Are you in the ‘too many colours is not enough’ camp? or the ‘less is more’ camp when it comes to having colours to choose from?
Unison Colour Associate Artist
Lucy spent her childhood living among picturesque coastal villages in both England and Wales. She studied for a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics which was followed by an international career in banking, and art could not have been further from her future. Soon in to her banking career she was sent on secondment to be a Bank Manager in Spain, where she still lives having left the Bank.
As a self taught artist, Lucy fell into art and the medium of pastels purely by chance once settled in Spain and she quickly gained her passion for pastels and now paints full time. She says “I love the connection and direct touch between my fingers and the paper when using pastels, and they allow me the freedom to enjoy the intuitive process of just using my hands and directly feeling the painting grow.”
Lucy has a natural affinity with the coast and the sea having always lived in coastal areas, saying “I love painting scenes where I want to just be in and stare, or get lost in, and am particularly drawn to water, loving both the calm and the drama. At the waters edge anywhere in the world is my happy place.”
Through trial and error she has found her favourite pastels are most definitely Unison Colour: “For me Unison Colour Pastels are unbeatable for their quality, reliability and superior blend-ability. Their buttery softness is a joy to work with and I find the depth of pigmentation is perfect for my work. I am slowly building up my perfect sunrise to sunset beach set of shades.”
Lucy now paints full time from her studio overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and loves receiving personal commissions from all over the world: “Through the reaches of social media I have been lucky enough to sell worldwide and I have received many varied commissioned pieces to paint for clients too, which are always a pleasure, from A4 smaller pieces right up to 1.5M wide triptychs. It is an honour to recreate someone’s special memory or to create a new one. One of the biggest compliments I can receive on a piece I have painted is that it makes the viewer relax or feel calm by looking at it.”

Maybe it was a ‘Sliding Doors’ moment of walking past a Spanish art shop that had a box of pretty pastel sticks in their window display in the centre of Palma.
In May we held a recruitment exercise for new Associate Artists and we were overwhelmed with the number of applications. So much so we will have 2 groups of new artists. Our 2nd group will be announced in August 2020.
