I get a lot of comments like “wow, looks like a photo”, but with a closer look it’s not so close to the reference after all. My goal is not to recreate the photo in all the details.
I recently challenged myself to create a saltmarsh beach painting using a more vibrant pallet. I had noticed that many pastel painters used an underpainting to create a finished piece that glowed with colour. So, I set off to achieve the same result.
Iceland is a unique and spiritual country bursting with inspiration for artists. I was lucky enough to travel there in December, 2021 and on my return I built a small body of work based on this fantastic experience

When I first picked up a pastel after years of aggressive pain medications, I quickly realised that all I really needed was my faculties back and a beautiful distraction.
One of the most common questions I get about painting is “How can I loosen up?”. A technique that I use quite often, especially in my mangrove series, is to use an older painting as the photo reference.
This is my first blog for Unison Colour as an Associate Artist and I’m very excited to be sharing some of my pastel painting techniques and inspiration behind my work with you!
There is something magical about being painting while feeling the wind on your skin and hearing the nature around you.
