Imagination-Building Exercise

I started drawing relatively recently and from 2015 up to this day, I am in the process of creative search and self-study.

Like any artist, I experience various states of creativity – both euphoria from good moments and satisfaction from my work, and disappointment and devastation from the fact that nothing works, as a result I have mountains of ruined sheets of paper. It happens when I am ‘struck by a block’, when there is a need to draw, but I do not know what to draw. There are a lot of ideas and there is no definite plan. In a period of confusion, a simple exercise helps me, a technical task for the imagination, it can be applied in any technique and to any genre of fine art.

Some decisions come by accident. I came to this exercise after getting an order to make a copy of my own work, but the identical copy was not interesting to me. It was decided to make a copy in a different colour scheme, and in order not to limit myself, I made three colour variations at the same time.

The result is the same landscape at different times of the day.

Thus, I can experiment with the seasons or use the negative effect in portrait painting, or by varying the age. This creates a series of work.

For the development of imagination, observation helps; you can use colour combinations from various landscapes, combining in one work. So, for the night version, I took the sunset sky while looking at my photos from other places.

There is also another simple way to visualize a picture in a different light – this is to process it using Photoshop. Using various filters for your work, you can find unusual combinations, and this gives freedom and ease in the future in the choice of colour combinations.

Trying such an exercise, you no longer think about technique and composition, you work only with colour, this gives you freedom from the framework of perception of reality, transforming it into your vision and colour flow.
