We recently held a joint competition with pastel artist Rebecca De Mendonça to win her inspiring new book ‘Pastel for Absolute Beginners’ which The Artist magazine says ‘is one of the best & most comprehensive books on pastel there has been for a long time – possibly ever’. Alongside winning the book was also the chance to win a Unison 36 set.
Artists were asked to submit a picture that had an autumnal theme. We were overwhelmed with entries. Rebecca said ‘it was great to see how everyone had interpreted the challenge, and a pleasure to see lovely pastel work. It was very difficult to pick a winner’.
The winner was Tatsiana Kashtalyan with her painting ‘Lake in the Fall’.
Rebecca loved the simplicity & calm of the piece, and the variety of mark making that gives a great sense of depth. The use of light & dark in the foreground, & softer more subtle tonal contrasts in the background all make it a beautiful painting.

Hi I am a beginner I hope this is the right place to post this. I just received Pastels for the Absolute Beginner from my husband. What a great book to introduce newcomers like me to Pastel painting!
I can’t wait to try some of Rebecca’s instructions when I get my supplies together.
