Mangroves Online Workshop with Julie Skoda

Mangroves Online Workshop with Julie Skoda 1

Saturday 3rd June

Join Unison Colour Associate Artist, Julie Skoda, on an online workshop day, painting your own version of ‘Mangroves’.

Learn to work with a watercolour underpainting, experimenting to see how pigments blend together into each other, drip and layer.

Then working with the pastels, first with the wide edge of the stick to create the beginning shapes, you’ll graduate through to the smaller, more precise marks as the layers build, ending with the bright pops of eye candy to finish the painting.

Julie will be supporting you throughout the day in the dedicated community group, including 2 Live Q&A sessions, answering all your questions in detail.

Participants will be able to share their progress within the group and compare their experiences and even help each other.

The workshop is available for £50, or at no extra cost to all Pastel Academy members.

Using Your Painting as a Photo Reference

One of the most common questions I get about painting is “How can I loosen up?”. A technique that I use quite often, especially in my mangrove series, is to use an older painting as the photo reference.

Associate Artist Intake for 2022

It seems a while ago since we asked for applications from artists to become an Associate Artists & wow the applications came in thick & fast. So much so it took our Unison Helen a good while to get through them all.

Discovering Reflected Color

When asked to identify the color of a shadow, it is common to respond that it would be a darker color of whatever is in shadow.  A shadow of a tree on green grass would be a darker green.  A shadow of the same tree on dirt would be a darker brown.

Garden of Colour and Flight

On two sides looking out the windows is the woods, the view begins not four foot off the sidewalls where trees and open forest floor slope up and gently away. When the spring rain comes, water gathers in the high places and forms water falling streams that run toward and alongside the studio heading toward gathering ponds on the lower side.
