The Surfaces
Rebecca will be using Winsor paper for her piece, colour Leather, although she has also done this piece on a range of surfaces, including Colourfix primer, Fabriano Tiziano paper and Canson Mi-Tientes paper. You can buy the Winsor paper from The Range (in the UK).
We cannot emphasize enough that using a golden brown colour surface will really make it easier to do this piece!
That is because the golden brown is part of the colour of the horse’s coat, so in places we can just leave it to show. This piece is more of a sketch than a painting, so lots of the surface will be left on show.
If you do not have the right colour, you could do several things….

Or if working on a more robust surface, you could wash into it with water or alcohol
Or you could prime a rigid surface (such as card) with acrylic paint (a mixture of Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre and White) and when that’s dry, paint a layer or two of Colourfix clear primer over it.
Rebecca shows how she tints surfaces at the beginning of the video workshop.
She also has a video on YouTube showing several techniques to do this with pastel surfaces.
