Unison Colour Associate Artist

Unison Colour welcomes Julie Swan as an Associate Artist

Julie Walsh paints under her maiden name of Julie Swan. She was born in 1961 in the Thames Estuary town of Leigh-on-Sea and grew up with a deep connection to the world of marine life, the sea, sailing, fishing boats, sunsets and sunrise. Julie followed her marine calling by turning down a place at art college to go to sea and work on the cruise ships. She continues to be fascinated by boats and anything associated with estuaries and big skies.

Julie only returned to art a few of years ago and in January 2020 had her first solo exhibition where she sold 25 of the 30 pieces shown and generated a steady stream of commissions and workshop opportunities. She loves helping others to unleash their creative soul by running soft pastel workshops locally and online where people can learn to paint their very soft pastel gem such as the sunset boat paintings.

Julie believes it’s never too late and that we all have something in us worth expressing and sharing.

I would describe my work as ‘wellbeing on the wall’. I am inspired to create work that brings a smile to the owner each time they look at it. It may conjure up a specific memory or just invoke a certain feeling that makes them feel good. I particularly enjoy recreating treasured moments. I love capturing holiday vignettes that transport you back to that joyful place and time and I enjoy seeking out 'quirky' corners and little scenes to paint. In hypnotherapy a safe place refers to a place of calm, peace and joy where you can escape to in your imagination. My paintings are intended to be ‘safe places’. Images taken from photographs, real life and imagination that make my soul feel good. I work mainly in soft pastels because I love the vibrancy and immediacy of them and the way they blend to create mood and atmosphere. Soft pastels are amazing for skies and sunsets but also for capturing animals and pets. There are just too many subjects and not enough time to do them all.

Finding Confidence

What does confidence mean to you?
Confidence to me means not being afraid of failing or messing up. Personally, failure is not a term I use because anything that doesn’t turn out the way we intended is something to reflect and learn from.
