    Pastel Society Awards 2025

Kate and Dan Hersey were honoured to be asked again to select three paintings to be recipients of the Unison Colour Award. The quality of the pieces displayed in this year’s exhibition are truly remarkable, so choosing only three was a challenging task.

    Pastels Can Be Punk Rock

Like millions of other people, I’ve always struggled with my mental health. Anxiety attacks, depression, low self-confidence, paranoia, OCD, imposter syndrome and so on, throw in ADHD and dyslexia and you get a heady mix.

    The Pigment Trail

When I fell in love with India, I discovered it to be my personal, artistic inspiration; the colours, the people, the smells, the light. This is an insight into how this inspiration became an ode to India.

Sketching, Colour and Soft Pastel – My Way

Colour is a wonderful thing, and for me, most of what I do creatively revolves around the initial spark that colour send to my brain and how I go about trying to capture that spark in my soft pastel paintings.

  • Fixative or no fixative by elena degenhardt feat v3

    Fixative or NO Fixative?

In most cases, I don't use any fixative but sometimes I do, for example, when I work quite thickly with pastel marks. In this case, I might only spray these particular areas.

Fixative and the ‘Road To Damascus’

Let’s talk about fixative!  I think it is fair to say that when it comes to the use of fixative there are polarised views.  In fact, there are probably as many opinions about the use of fixative as there are pastellists.

Unison Colour HQ – Here We Come!

When you’re planning your summer holiday, what are you looking for? Tropical beaches, action packed activities, local cuisine & wine perhaps. Well, that’s a pretty nice list but we decided to stay in the UK.

Colour Chart Guidance

We believe the colours in our web based colour chart are a faithful representation of our pastel range. But with any colours portrayed on the internet, there’s a whole heap of variables which mean that what you see, may not be what we see. That said, there’s some things that can be done to mitigate some of the variance.

Mobile phone and tablet screens tend to be pretty good for colour, so they’re always worth using, when viewing our colour chart.

We hate to say it, but cheaper computer displays, including laptops, can be rather hit and miss, in both colour and contrast, so they might not reveal the depth of the colour, as well as the true tone.

If you’re really keen on getting your computer up to speed on colour representation, you can use a calibration device to reach your display's fullest potential.

With all that said, if you think we’re way off the mark with any of the colours then, by all means let us know, and we’ll give it another shot.
