Rievaulx Terrace
Rievaulx Terrace is a National Trust property in the North York Moors that comprises the majesty of an 18th century landscape garden complete with two temples. The Terrace overlooks Rievaulx Abbey (English Heritage), affording stunning views of one of Yorkshire’s most beautiful Cistercian abbeys.

On a bitterly cold day in November, I painted two scenes, filmed by Tony Parkin of T.P. Visuals. In this Part 1 short video, I create a mixed media painting of the Ionic Temple on the Terrace, using ArtGraf Tailor Shape blocks of water soluble pigment, watercolour and Unison Colour pastels on Canson Moulin du Roy HP watercolour paper (300 gsm, 140lb). My intention is to use wet media in an expressive, free way, and to carry that expressiveness through to the mark making of the pastel stage. There is no need to wait for watercolour washes to dry or indeed to be particularly adept with watercolour; and drips or ‘mistakes’ can be dealt with during the pastel stage.
