In this tutorial, Caitlin will guide you through different approaches to ‘Drawing from Nature – including quick preliminary sketches done from a vase of flowers. The video tutorial gives you an opportunity to draw along with Caitlin as you make your own compositional thumbnails. Caitlin then demonstrates how to use those initial studies as you begin your pastel work. Caitlin covers three different ways to ‘Draw from Nature’ –
- Drawing from life
- Drawing from photograph
- Drawing from memory

What you will need for this tutorial:
Pastel paper (I use Claire Fontaine Pastelmat Paper)
Unison Colour Pastels
A natural form (e.g. a view of your garden/a plant/a bunch of flowers)
I used a selection of colours in this video – predominantly made up of colours from the 63 half stick set (when colours were finished I bought the same colours in full stick size).
