Meet The Maker! – Sue

Our beautiful pastels couldn’t be made without the skill and passion of our small, tight-knit team at Unison Colour. From mixing, making, packaging, and marketing, our hands-on team is dedicated to delivering our beautiful product to you. So, if you haven’t already met us in person, we thought we’d introduce you to the team!

Hello Sue! Sue has been working at Unison Colour for nearly three years and lives locally in Bellingham.

What are your favourite and least favourite pastels to make?

BG8 – I love the rich turquoise colour, plus its lovely to roll and cut. I’m not a fan of BE21 – it twists and turns when you roll it, keeping them straight is a challenge!

What do you love about working at Unison Colour?

Working with the brilliant team at Thorneyburn makes the work very enjoyable, as do the frequent visitations of wildlife. From my window, I see goldfinches, bullfinches and woodpeckers eating from the bird feeder. Cyril, our resident cockerel, comes to the door every morning demanding his breakfast!

Where is your favourite place to visit in Northumberland?

Anywhere in the Cheviots, but especially the walk to Hen Hole. I love the unspoilt beauty of the College Valley too.

If you could create a pastel set, what would it be?

A collection of earthy, neutral pastels to capture the colours of old stone walls and the bright lichens that grow on them. It would contain lots of Yellow Green Earths and Greys!

And finally, what is your favourite thing to do of an evening?

Wind down with a glass of red wine after a long walk!

Sue, rolling pastels.

  1. The whole team are wonderful so thank you to all of you – especially when you have to roll the colours that are least obliging (but still loved by artists) 😊

  2. As a matter of interest why are some colours more difficult to roll out?

Feel a bit of a numpty for asking this 😂

  3. What a pleasure to “meet” you! Thanks for all your beautiful work creating Unison pastels. It’s a pleasure to use them in my paintings of birds, wildlife and farm animals. I too enjoy watching the goldfinches, siskins, and many more at our feeder!

  4. All through life I’ve never been able to think of a “dream” job, until I joined Unison Colour here. I’ve finally found my dream job – to make Unison Pastels. I’m 61, live in Canada, and will never be able to live around Northumberland, but hopefully one day will be able to take a dream trip to visit and tour and at least watch. Sending the best to all you fortunate ones making beautiful pastels at Unison!
